Following the Normandy landing, France was put under the military control of the Allies for its collaboration with the Nazi Party. As putative head of state was French General Giraud, who had collaborated with the Allied Nations in North Africa. The real power, however, rested with the Allied Military Government for France. The new government was faced with various threats coming from both the right and the left.
