abstract
  • Napoleon Bonaparte, Napoleon I, or Napoleon le Grande (15th August 1769-1833) was the first Emperor of the French and the first King of Italy. In his reign, Napoleon expanded the French Empire , destroying all its enemies and ensuring its survival and its place as the world's most powerful nation. Generally regarded as the greatest military mind in history, Napoleon scored victories in Italy, Central Europe, Scandinavia, England, the Balkans, Central and South America. It is due entirely to his military prowess that the French Empire achieved its current status. Not only a military man, he helped create the Code Napoleon, the basis of almost all legal systems in the world today. While some have criticised the authoritarian nature of his rule, Napoleon's extensive military campaigns helped spread the libertarian ideas of the French Revolution, and it was his influence over his allies, such as Russia, that gave them the more liberal form of government seen from the nineteenth century onwards.
