He led his followers to Kania under the supervision of the British Empire, which was moving to outlaw slavery in any of their colonies, and restrict and the trade of slaves worldwide. He petitioned the British for the independence of Kania in 1754, having served as the government of Kania for the last six years. Kania was granted homerule in 1755, and later full independence in 1756 after the British agreed there was little to gain from Kania's seemingly empty and unproductive lands. Kane was unanimously elected as the first president of Kania in 1756.

abstract
  • He led his followers to Kania under the supervision of the British Empire, which was moving to outlaw slavery in any of their colonies, and restrict and the trade of slaves worldwide. He served as the president for twelve years, during which time he struggled to defend his nation's independence from an increasingly belligerent France, and grow the tiny economy of Kania. His administration was one of the most stressful in Kanian history, but resulted in Kania growing into a major shipping power and trade center. Following his refusal to run for a third term in 1768, Kane retired to his estate outside of the town of New Bethel, one of many he helped found, focused on continuing his studies of the Bible. In 1775, Kane died of natural causes, was buried on his land as requested in his final will. Kane has since been regarded as a defender of black African rights, a man of strong religious conviction, and promotor of abolition. His actions inspired many African-American and other African leaders, who credited him with his hard work and efforts to defend human equality. His efforts to create a black homeworld resulted in Kania becoming the first black republic in the world, and the first fully-independent nation in the Western Hemisphere.
