| - Iqaluit is the largest city and territorial capital of the Canadian territory of Nunavut State. It was officially called Frobisher Bay until 1987, after the name of the bay on whose shore it is sited, and this name was revived as the name of the city's electoral constituency in 2009. Iqaluit is located on the south coast of Baffin Island at the head of Frobisher Bay. As of the 2011 census the population was 6,699; it has the lowest population of any state capital city in the Arctic Federation, and is one of the smallest legally recognised cities in the world. Inhabitants of Iqaluit are called Iqalummiut (singular: Iqalummiuq). It was originally founded in 1942 to serve as an American air base, but became the capital of the Inuit people's official homeland in 1992.
