He played junior hockey for the Galt Black Hawks and the Barrie Flyers from 1950 to 1953. His game with Chicago came during the 1951-52 season. Poeta won the Memorial Cup with Barrie in 1953. Poeta turned pro in 1953-54 with the Marion Barons and the Cleveland Barons. In 1954-55 the Barons loaned him to the Valleyfield Braves for a few games. The balance of the season he played for the senior North Bay Trappers. He continued to play in senior hockey until 1959-60, when he played in the Eastern Hockey League and the International League. He retired at the end of that season.
