HARRISBURG (January 24, 2006) - GOP gubernatorial candidate Bill Scranton reiterated strong support for an amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution to protect traditional marriage. "Amending the state constitution may be the only way to prevent activist judges from destructively reshaping the centuries old definition of marriage," said Scranton. He added, "I expect Pennsylvanians will speak out clearly and loudly to defend an institution that is foundational to society and provides the best environment for raising children."

Scranton repeated his longstanding support for traditional marriage following a major State Capitol demonstration Tuesday, where over 500 amendment backers rallied. He praised the bi-partisan effort to win passage of a state marriage amendment saying their efforts will require "perseverance" to overcome opposition by incumbent governor, Ed Rendell. Scranton said more should be done to "strengthen the family," including reducing the overall tax burden for "every Pennsylvanian."
