This small class of torpedo boats was custom-built for the use off the Flanders coast. Although all boats were ordered at the Vulcan shipyard in Hamburg, several hulls were built by other shipyards and delivered to Hamburg for completion. Sixteen of the boats were even transported to Antwerp over land by train and assembled there. The lack of artillery armament proved to be a major weakness, though, and the boats are pretty much useless against enemy destroyers. However, their small size makes them hard to hit, and the shallow draught of only one meter enables them to go to places no one else can go.
