The City of Springfield Mayoral election of 1984 was likely the last one in which now-governor Mary Bailey participated. Because Bailey would be running for Governor upon leaving office, she likey was a well liked mayor at home, and so probably had no opponent. She also likely did something extraordinary in office, as Springfield is a relatively small city, and not a good place to earn state-wide name recognition.
