Bagnall emigrated to Canada in 1949 as he saw Germany and Britain growing closer together. He joined the RCAF and was transfered to the Defence Ministry Building in Ottawa. In 1964, he met David Goldfarb, who had served with him on a Lancaster as radio operator, while Goldfarb was being held in the capital. He was able to get David a meeting with Colonel McWilliams which in turn freed his family and allowed them to settle in Canada.
