Malebolgia (also referred to at times as the Malebolgia) is the name of a Demon in the Spawn universe, drawing its name from the term in Dante's Inferno used to describe Malebolge, the ditches (bolge) in the eighth circle of Hell where the evil (male) are punished. He was Spawn's master and one of the major Lords of Hell.

| - The Demon Malebolgia was one of the most powerful rulers of Hell, and reigned unchallenged in the 8th circle of Hell for 70,000 years. He struck a deal with Albert Simmons to make him the newest Hellspawn. He was only one of Hell's many rulers forming an army in its forthcoming Armageddon war against Heaven and God.
Malebolgia was responsible for the creation of the newest Hellspawn, Al Simmons. Malebolgia was respected and feared as the most powerful of the rulers, and thus the de-facto grand master of Hell. His powers include energy projection, matter manipulation, enormous physical strength, recuperative abilities, and abilities to morph and induce hallucinations. His standing in Hell's hierarchy gives him nigh-unlimited power while in the 8th Sphere. His mastery of Necroplasm gives him the exclusive ability to create Hellspawn and during his rule, he created an army larger than anything Heaven could handle.
Background
Malebolgia saw promise in a military and tactical assassin, Al Simmons. He sent Al back to Earth as the new Spawn so that he could see his wife, Wanda Blake, once more. However he twisted the deal, along with of his words, to constantly make Al's life a living hell. Malebolgia's plan was to make Al the newest Hellspawn, an officer in training to serve in the army of Hell when it waged war against Heaven in the mighty Armageddon battle.
Malebolgia's main officer was Violator, who was sent to train Al to use his hate and anger to strengthen Hell's army with more soldiers. At first, all Hellspawn are confused and quickly and irresponsibly use their powers to further kill their foe. However, Spawn found an ally in Cogliostro, a previous Hellspawn, who trained him to go against Malebolgia's wishes.
Malebolgia continue to watch the young Hellspawn via his blood-pool tracking pool and laughed with ever new slip of his power and murder Spawn committed.
Malebolgia was slain by Spawn. Spawn was offered the crown of the Eighth Circle, and though he declined, Spawn still received vastly enhanced powers and a command over Hell itself. It has become known that Mammon was a far more commanding presence in Hell than Malebolgia and though he was given self-determination and rule over Hell he was far from the most powerful being in The Pit.

| - *Malebolgia is one of the few characters from Spawn who has made an appearance or a cameo in other Image books outside the core Spawn title and its spin-offs. He was notably absent, but was mentioned, during Chapel's rise to power in Hell when he usurped control of Hell away from Lucifer and became Lord Chapel as part of a large Image crossover including Prophet, Supreme, the groups Youngblood, Brigade and others. Lucifer also appeared in the Angela Vol 1 mini-series, quite different from the Lucifer in the Liefeld-laden crossover but for the most part it is believed that he is not the Satan of the Spawn universe. That leaves Malebolgia and Mammon as the highest ranking devil-like characters in Spawn canon.

Malebolgia acted as the chief antagonist of Spawn for over 100 issues until his ultimate downfall and held great power, though it was later revealed he was "but a flea" compared to beings such as Mammon, yet for a long time such beings served him loyally (or at least acted loyal) - one of Malebolgia's most infamous henchmen was the Violator, who would become an archenemy of Spawn throughout the series. Malebolgia was obsessed with creating an army of Hellspawn by which to spark the apocalypse and tear down the gates of Heaven and make Earth into a living Hell - the rebellion of Spawn proved to be a thorn in Malebolgia's side and ultimately his demise.

The prime candidate for the first Governor was Brigham Elisha Dashwood III, an evangelist and politician who was also running the newly opened Brigham Elisha Dashwood Laboratory of Alternative Mentalities -- a mental hospital. Behind the scenes, the hospital was a front for the newly re-formed Hellfire Club, which was working to ensure Dashwood's election with the help of the demon Marchosias. The Eighth Doctor and Charley Pollard became involved with the Laboratory and the Club, and subsequently exposed Dashwood's activities, ending his political career.
