In most games in the Battlefield series since Battlefield 2, many weapons available to players can have their fire mode selector switch manipulated, allowing players to change a weapon's firemode. All automatic, burst, and semi-auto weapons in all games in the series have set firerates that weapons will cap out at when firing.

  • Rate of fire is the frequency at which a specific weapon can fire or launch its projectiles. It is usually measured in rounds per minute (RPM or round/min), or per second (RPS or round/s).
  • Most units have a ROF of 2.0 or slightly less or more. Units with heavy attack, including siege weapons, usually have a lower ROF, going from 3.49 for a Hand Cannoneer up to 10 for a Trebuchet. The following different values for ROF are also possible for militairy units: 1.7 (Elite Cataphract) 1.8 (Cataphract, (Elite) Magyar Huszar, Knight/Cavalier) 1.9 (Condottiero, Hussar, (Elite) Samurai (without civilization bonus), Paladin) 3.0 (Elite Skirmisher) 3.49 (Hand Cannoneer) 6.0 (Mangonel)

  • Rate of Fire is the frequency at which a specific weapon can fire its projectiles, or magic attack for wands. This correlates to ranged attack speed. Rate of fire directly affects the speed of attack for weapons for which the character has the autoshot ability (mages, priests, and warlocks with wands, and hunters with bows, crossbows, or guns). For shots or throws which must be manually initiated, the manual triggering process tends to overshadow the rate of fire; still the manual shot is available sooner. Hunters' Auto Shot grants a 15% ranged haste bonus.

  • Rate of fire, often abbreviated ROF, refers to how quickly a weapon can fire, rearm/reload and fire again. Each weapon has its own rate of fire. This is one of the variables used to calculate the total damage per second that a unit can inflict. The rate of fire has two components. The first is the amount of times the weapon can fire per second. A value less than one means that there is a pause of more than one second between shots. The second component is the number of projectiles that are launched each time the weapon fires. Rate of fire: 1.5 × 4

The second component is the number of projectiles that are launched each time the weapon fires. For instance, the Cybran T3 Anti-Air SAM Launcher's Nanite Missile System has the following rate of fire: Rate of fire: 1.5 × 4 This indicates that the weapon fires 4 missiles, pauses for 0.66 seconds, and then fires 4 more missiles.
