| - This is a list of bus routes in Greater Manchester. First Greater Manchester and Stagecoach Manchester are the major operator of bus services in Greater Manchester with First the major operator in most of the north of Manchester and Stagecoach the major operator in the south Manchester and in Wigan in the north of the region, although following Stagecoach's takeover of Bluebird in 2013 and First's takeover of Finglands in 2014, both operators now operate on both sides of Manchester. Arriva North West runs services throughout the west of the county. There are several independent operators based in Greater Manchester, who run a combination of tendered and commercial bus services, including Bullocks, Checkmate, Cumfybus, Go Goodwins, Jim Stones Coaches, Manchester Community Transport, South Lancs Travel and Stotts. There are also several operators based outside of Greater Manchester who either run services wholly within the area or services which start from outside the area. Two of these, Rosso and Network Warrington are municipal bus companies. Other companies include BakerBus, Burnley and Pendle, First West Yorkshire, High Peak, [[Lancashire United, Stagecoach Merseyside and South Lancashire and Yorkshire Tiger. The companies all come under the System One network, which are the tickets and travelcards that can be used on all buses in the Greater Manchester area. Although not part of Greater Manchester, Culcheth, Hollins Green, Poynton and Wilmslow in Cheshire, Glossop and Hadfield in Derbyshire and Bacup, Edenfield and Whitworth in Lancashire are included in the System One ticketing system. Many of the current route numbers have historical origins dating back many years. For example in the 1970s many Bolton/Lancashire United routes were prefixed with a 5 (for example Route 59 Bolton to Wigan became 559), many of those in Wigan and Leigh were prefixed with a 6 and so on. Historically, the route numbers were allocated to the areas of Greater Manchester, with the creation of Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive|SELNEC in 1969.
