The village was established on 11 March 1947 on the land of the former moshav Hamara, which had been abandoned following the Tel Hai incident in 1920. The founders were members of three kvutzot who had met during their training in Kfar Giladi; Palmach trainees who were former members of the HaTenua HaMeuhedet youth movement, American HaBonim members who were Ma'apilim (illegal immigrants of the Aliyah Bet), and members of the Hayilim-Haultzim (Soldiers-Pioneers) gar'in made up of South Africans who had met whilst fighting in the British Army during World War II.
