The Skaven are socially organised into many feuding clans, each vying for ultimate supremacy over the Skaven under-empire. Of these, there are four greater clans: Clan Skryre, the engineers, Clan Pestilens, the plague bringers, Clan Moulder, the flesh moulders, and Clan Eshin, the nightlords. After these four giants are the warlord clans, of which the most notable is Clan Mors. The warlord clans often ally themselves to one of the major clans for influence and protection, with some ending up in the thrall of one of the big four. As well as the warlord clans there are countless many smaller, less significant clans, some even without name, these are collectively known as the multitudinous or rabble clans.

  • Skaven are a race of beastmen combining the natures of man and rat. They came into being amongst the ruins of the Old Slann civilisation, where giant rats were mutated by their exposure to a mighty source of raw magic, imbued with all the corrupting power of Chaos. This material is known as 'Warpstone' and, in its unrefined form, is very dangerous - prolonged exposure ot it producing severe mutations or death. The Skaven, however, not only have a high resistance to Warpstone, but actually gain energy from consuming it in a powdered, refined form. Skaven strongholds are scattered beneath ancient ruins all over the Known World, from which a spider's web of tunnels and warrens connects them to the sewers and drains beneath living cities. The Skaven's legendary capital of Skavenblight is rumoured to be situated deep in the great and desolate marshes of northwestern Tilea. They worship a Chaos god known as The Horned Rat, whose high priests go by the name of the Thirteen Lords of Decay. The direct servants of these priests are an order of shamans called the Grey Seers, while the bulk of Skaven society is organised into clans, including the warlock-engineers of Clan Skryre, the assassins of Clan Eshin, the Plague Monks of Clan Pestilens, and slave-warpers of Clan Moulder. In addition, there are numerous Warlord Clans, most of which are little more than packs ruled over by the strongest individual. The warlord clans make up at least 75% of the Skaven population and form the bulk of any fighting force. Skaven wear dark, ragged clothing over whatever assorted armour they possess. This is usually made from animal hides augmented with metal plates, studs, and tattered bits of mail scavenged from battlefields. Clan symbols are prominently displayed on clothing and shields and sometimes dyed or even branded into the fur. Favourite weapons are long knives with notched or serrated blades, sometimes mounted on poles, but they also employ a variety of hooked and entangling weapons.

  • The Skaven, sometimes known as the Ratmen, the Ratkin or the Children of the Horned Rat,[2b] are a malevolent and diabolical race of large humanoid rat-creatures that inhabits a massive inter-continental underground empire known in their tongue simply as the Under-Empire, where at the very heart of Skavendom lies the horrific city of Skavenblight, the species capital city and the probable birthplace of the Skaven race.[2f] The Skavens as a whole are a cruel, treacherous and highly numerous species that have since spread their loathsome corruption to the farthest corners of the Warhammer World.[1f] From deep below the earth, these scavengers have built a vast Empire, whose military power and incomprehensible numbers has the potential to smother the kingdoms of the Old World in a seething tide of violence and anarchy.[2b] It is believed by all of Skaven-kind that the world is destined to be theirs, for they consider themselves the Supreme Master Race, undeniably superior in everyway to all the other races of the World.[1f] This unwavering belief stems from the promises made by their horrificly malevolent deity, known by many legendary names, but his most well-known title is that of the Horned Rat. The Horned Rat is known as the Harbinger of Corruption and Disease, the embodiment of all things the Skaven are or ever will be, and whose worship over the Under-Empire is both supreme and absolute.[1h] Within the cruel hierarchy of the Under-Empire, the wishes and demands of the Horned Rat is issued and maintained by the ruthless tyranny of the Council of Thirteen, an organization that consist of the 12 most powerful Warlords within the Under-Empire whilst the 13th seat is reserve for the Horned Rat himself.[1i] It is due to the Council's harsh tyranny that the Under-Empire remained unified in some shape or form for centuries, for none could ever hope to overcome the legions of warriors the Council has under their iron-fisted rule. Out of all the mortal civilizations within the greater world, no single race, neither the ruthless Barbarian tribes of the North, nor the savage Greenskins of the East can be compared in terms of instability to that of the Skaven Under-Empire. The Skaven race as a whole is extremely divided, often far more divided then perhaps any other race known in existence. Such ruthless lack of cooperation stems from the Skaven's insatiable need to survive and reign tyrannical over his other brethrens. To every Skaven, there is no such thing as pity, remorse, compassion, or cooperation. There is simply survival, survival in a turbulent society that only spares those that possess the brute strength, extreme cunning, and the vicious instinct to outmaneuver and kill the opposition, no matter the cost or the body count of either friend or foe.[1f] Though no matter how divided their race may be, they are nonetheless unified in a single cause, and that cause is to conquer the surface world and bring about the Great Ascendancy, where it is said that the Horned Rat's children will swarm across the face of the earth and claim all of it as their own.[1h]

Skaven are an army that lack much in the way of war-machines and rely mainly on their sheer numbers, although their twisted minds have concieved some notable weapons of war, such as the Screaming Bells and the Doomwheel- being a clan-based society, Skaven rarely march to war under a single leader and tend to be loyal only to those who are strong or vicious enough to keep them from rebelling. The paranoia, hate and greed most Skaven possess is perhaps the only true weakness these rodents have and it is believed by many that if they could put aside their own differences and truly unite then the Skaven could effectively take over the world - thankfully for humanity there seems to be little chance of that occuring as the Skaven are stubborn in their ways and continue their in-fighting when not plotting the demise of the other races in the world.
