Each of the Spelunkers have identical abilities; the differences between them are purely cosmetic and do not affect gameplay. Four are available from the beginning, but the remaining sixteen must be unlocked by fulfilling certain requirements. Unlocking all 16 secret characters earns the Achievement 'The Entire Gang'. A padlock in the character selection menu tells you how many Spelunkers remains to be unlocked.

| - Unlock: Found inside a random Coffin in one of the four areas, only one character can be found per area. Break it open and this character may be found trapped inside, which you will unlock once she is released.
- Unlock: Can be bought from the Black Market for $10,000, or simply 'kidnapped'. May also be found in a coffin after seeing him in the Black Market.
- Unlock: Found inside a coffin at the top of the Haunted Castle level.
- Unlock: Found inside a coffin in a Flooded Cavern or "The Dead Are Restless" level.
