Tom Sims was the son of a ship's captain and no stranger to the sailor's way of life. He was one of the writers that continued E. C. Segar's work on the Thimble Theatre (aka Popeye) daily and Sunday comic strip. Following Segar's death, Sims was paired with artist Doc Winner for a few years, and then with Bela Zaboly for most of the 1940s and 1950s. Characters appearing during this period include Davy Jones, Gramaw Peg and Lummox.
