  • During a normal day on Planet Earth, the oceans are subjected to a massive tornado stabbing down from the sky that tears all life from the deep. The phenomeon steals away all dolphin life and several other creatures - save for one Ecco the Dolphin, who is now alone and confused. The dolphin now searches the Seven Seas for answers to their whereabouts, but has not yet found anything. While pondering one day, Ecco is attacked by a group of sharks ("ripteeth") which ambush and gang up on the dolphin. Ecco fights well, but the odds soon get a hold of him and he tires. Fortunately, Ecco is rescued by a killer whale who scares off the ripteeth. Ecco's new friend informs him that he has seen a large jewel, a glyph, in the deep that presented Ecco's face when he touched it. As they travel to it, Ecco reveals he has no idea where they came from but they help him search for his friends, acting as keys to secrets. He also knows there must be one that knows the answers. At the whale's glyph, the jewel reveals that Ecco must travel to the past to find his answers. Despite being terrified, Ecco agrees to travel "beyond time". Ecco soon finds himself in ancient seas, surrounded by odd creatures. Since he cannot tell friend from foe, Ecco quickly leaps into an area devoid of much life - except for a light-emitting machine. Ecco knows this is also foreign but cannot understand its language and is soon attacked by the enemy. After several attempts, the beam finally hits Ecco and he knows not to get caught again. The dolphin uses a weak cliff to send a calvalcade of rocks towards the machine, destroying it. Unfortunately, the ensuing explosion pushes Ecco up to the surface and into the claws of a pterodactyl. Thankfully, he soon learns that this dinosaur is a friend, taking him to a glyph in the sky. Using his sonar once more, Ecco learns that he must travel to the seas of Atlantis, a city where humans created the glyphs and filled them with wisdom in preparation for Ecco's journey. The glyph also states that his foe is from another planet entirely and placed machines in the hope that the glyphs would not be able to help Ecco. The Vortex are aliens that live in a world that no longer contains food; abundant with life, Earth was the perfect target. Eager to leave this world, Ecco returns to the seas for the next glyph and only just makes it to the transport before being eaten. A new destination is more familiar to Ecco, complete with ice and seagulls. Ecco is dizzy from the travel but can't rest when a jellyfish ("fingerfish") comes to ensnare him. Before it can sap his strength, Ecco heads to the surface but finds it has grown a shell (ice) but believes himself to be safe. Wrong again, Ecco is attacked by a polar bear who wishes to eat him. With nowhere to go, Ecco uses his powerful fins to make another hole in the ice that sends the bear to the depths below. The two foes decide to fight each and when the polar bears returns victorius, Ecco provides him with a fish before heading to Atlantis. The city of mystery, antiquity and knowledge soon appears to him and he quickly discovers a long line of glyphs waiting to talk to him. They reveal that the Vortex caused the humans to flee Atlantis and seeded the dolphin race with the hope of eventually raising a powerful hero in Ecco that could save Earth. Confiriming he has the will to fight, Ecco is granted the power to recognise his foes, locate the machines they have planted, destroy them and communicate from a great distance. Determined to save his people and make the glyphs proud, Ecco returns home to kill the Vortex. Ecco finds one of the devices and uses his awesome new powers to fight it, but a shield is stopping him achieving his victory. A being known as The Asterite reveals that he is protecting it. The entity wonders if it should wipe out both dolphin and Vortex to end all talk of battle and states that the aliens are only doing what they must to survive. Frustrated, Ecco fires a sonar blast at The Asterite, demonstrating his power. While impressed, the Asterite decides to imprison Ecco while he talks, since he has a job for Ecco to do. The dolphin refuses to help, but the alien reveals that he can help Ecco. The Asterite originally arrived on Earth to gather knowledge of the planet by sending parts of himself across the world. One of his pieces remains stuck in a trench and without this Black Pearl, the Asterite is incomplete. Recognising that the small and cunning Ecco is the only one capable of retrieving it, he promises to teach Ecco the language of the Vortex should he be successful. Acknowleding his own power, Ecco speeds off to rescue the pearl and save his friends!
