In I Know What You Did Last Summer, it was revealed that his family owned a house with a pig farm that they moved to because of the hate they received from the 1994 Lakewood Murders. After his parents moved out, Troy apparently stayed behind. As a result of feeling guilty and not willing to abandon the James family, Maggie would visit Troy even with a very young Emma with her. This explains why Emma has been seeing Troy's barn in her dreams, it's because they're repressed memories. We learned that sometime ago that Troy moved away from his pig farm and house, which it's presumed that the new killer has been occupying it.
