Ghost Rider is a 1991 United Pictures superhero action film starring, written, produced and directed by Gene Simmons and based off of the Marvel Comics character. While a critical success and regarded as one of the better comic book movies released in a period awash with them, the film was overshadowed by one of the most profitable summers in Hollywood history and failed to make as much money as United Pictures had hoped. However, Ghost Rider has a strong cult following and spawned a mature spinoff TV series in the late 1990's on HBO produced by Simmons and starring Johnny Depp.
