Lossy compression is a type of compression technology, which sacrifices visual precision of an image for storage efficiency (between 10:1 and 50:1 for still images, and 50:1 to 200:1 for video images). This process makes subsequent complete recovery of the original data impossible. Lossy compression can provide significantly greater compression than lossless compression techniques.
