After Italy's surrender German troops were given authorization to utilize her colonies as base of operations to fight British troops across the globe. Throughout the later months of 1918 intensive U-Boat operations in the Mediterranean Sea broke the blocade imposed on Europe within that area, this allowed the deployment of troops in Libya which started the western front against Egypt.
