Beaks appeared on The Murray Phillips Show to tell his side of the story, to confront the DA Freida Lewis who felt he was released too soon, and to call his rape victim, Ellen Mason, to publicly apologize, but she refused to answer the call, which prompted Beaks to call her after the show (in a harassing manner) to accept his apology. Later Beaks stopped by Ellen's home, flanked by a phalanx of press, but she refused to speak with him. Beaks continued to harass Ellen by phone, so Ellen hired a hitman, Charles Hatch, to kill Beaks and end her pain. Hatch caught Beaks near his apartment and tried to strangle him, but was scared off by the presence of other tenants. Later, Hatch lined up his sniper rifle on Beaks inside his place and fired, killing him.
