The Second Hyperspace War was a galaxy-spanning conflict that broke out in 168 ABY about a year after Empress Allya Pallopides, a descendent of a relative of the long-dead Emperor Palpatine of the first Galactic Empire, came to power, killing Emperor Wier Fel and declaring the Empire-in-exile the Galactic Imperium. She did it with the backing of the One Sith Remnant of Darth Kryos, who aided her for several years in secret by eliminating her opponents. Their primary opponent was the Third Republic, though various other governments and organizations joined into the war. Those included the Outer Rim Coalition, a group of planets of the Outer Rim Territories, and a band of rogues known as the United Pirate Fleets.

Empress Pallopides came to power a year before the war, with the backing of Darth Kryoss' One Sith. They helped her overthrow the unpopular Emperor Wier Fel, the last descendent of the Fel dynasty. His death ended the Fel family, and the Pallopides family came to power as the new Imperial family. Pallopides declared the Empire-in-exile the Galactic Imperium shortly afterwards. The war was foreseen by both sides, and preparations had months begun before the war itself.
