The 1979 American 500 was a Winston Cup (now Nextel Cup) event held at North Carolina Speedway on October 21, 1979. Richard Petty couldn't have asked for a better day. First, he won the race, leading 139 of the 492 laps in route to a narrow victory over Benny Parsons. Second and more importantly, Petty took the points lead for the first time all season, leading Darrell Waltrip by eight points with two races to go in the season. Stats
