The Titan II was an American Human-rated expendable rocket that was in service with NASA and the United States Air Force in the mid-20th century. The rocket was used for national defense and space exploration. Titan II rockets were later used in the mid-21st century, during World War III, as a type of nuclear missile. One of this type of rocket formed the framework and launch vehicle for Zefram Cochrane's experimental warp ship, the Phoenix. (Star Trek: First Contact)

The rocket was used for national defense and space exploration. Titan II rockets were later used in the mid-21st century, during World War III, as a type of nuclear missile. One of this type of rocket formed the framework and launch vehicle for Zefram Cochrane's experimental warp ship, the Phoenix. (Star Trek: First Contact) During the 23rd century, a photo of a Titan II rocket hung on a corridor wall just outside the base commander's office at Starbase 11 in 2267. (TOS: "Court Martial" ) The photo appearing in "Court Martial" depicted the Project Gemini capsule on a Titan II rocket. It was one of many photos taken in 1965 and 1966 for public use by NASA. According to the Star Trek: The Next Generation Sketchbook: The Movies, an actual Titan II from the Titan Missile Museum in Green Valley, Arizona was used by the Star Trek: First Contact design team in both inspiration and application. The Star Trek Fact Files, however, describes the missile used as the launch vehicle for the Phoenix as a Titan V missile. The non-existent Titan V was to be a type of launch vehicle, proposed in 1988, as an upgrade of the Titan IV, but was never built. According to the Star Trek Encyclopedia (3rd ed., p. 512), the launch vehicle for the Phoenix was the Titan V. It was developed as an intercontinental ballistic missile by the United States Government. In a background note for the article, the authors wrote that the change in designation by the art department from Titan II to Titan V was that (a.) the rocket engines were changed and (b.) the Titan II did not have the power to launch the Phoenix into orbit.
