  • Elisabeth Carlotta Helena Berta Bunnenberg, better known as Lale Andersen, was a German chanson singer-songwriter. In 1929, she moved to Berlin and made various appearances in cabarets around the city. Throughout the 1930s she continued to appear in cabarets in Zurich and Munich. In 1939, she recorded the song "Lili Marleen", which gained popularity throughout war-torn Europe. Nazi officials did not approve the song and Joseph Goebbels prohibited it from being played on the radio. Andersen was not allowed to perform publicly for nine months, not just because of the song but because of her friendship with Rolf Liebermann and other Jewish artists she had met in Zurich. In desperation, she reportedly attempted suicide. Andersen was so popular, however, that the Nazi government allowed her to perform again, albeit subject to several conditions, one of which was she would not sing "Lili Marleen". Goebbels did order her to make a new "military" version of the song (with a significant drum) which was recorded in June 1942. In the remaining war years, Andersen had one minor appearance in a propaganda movie and was made to sing several propaganda songs in English. Shortly before the end of the war, Lale retired to Langeoog, a small island off the North Sea coast of Germany. After the war, she continued to perform as a singer and represented her homeland at the 1961 Contest with the song Einmal sehen wir uns wieder, which finished in 13th place. She remained the oldest participant for over 45 years until the record was broken by Croatian entertainer 75 Cents in 2008. In August 1972, she died of a heart attack in Vienna at the age of 67.
