| - The Volga German Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (German: Autonome Sozialistische Sowjetrepublik der Wolgadeutschen; Russian: Автономная Советская Социалистическая Республика Немцев Поволжья, Avtonomnaya Sovetskaya Sotsialisticheskaya Respublika Nemtsev Povolzh'ya) was an autonomous republic of the Soviet Union. During the reign of Catherine the Great, Germans were allowed to colonize the region around the Volga River. The Volga German ASSR was establish on October 19, 1918, with Pokrovsk (renamed Engels in 1931) as the capital. The Volga German ASSR was officially dissolved on August 28, 1941, in response to the German invasion of the Soviet Union in June. The Volga Germans would then be deported to Central Asia under the orders of Joseph Stalin. Despite the death of Stalin in 1953, the Volga Germans have not returned to the Volga River. Most Volga Germans have either moved to Germany or remain in Kazakhstan. The Volga German ASSR has been spotted several times across the multiverse. The name Volgaland (German: Wolgaland) has been attributed to the region across several timelines. In most cases, the region remains an autonomous republic of the USSR. In one, the region would become an exclave of a greater German Empire. Several examples include:
* Groß-Deutschland
* New Union This is a disambiguation page, a list of pages that otherwise might share the same title. If an article link referred you to this title, you might want to go back and fix it to point directly to the intended page.
