William played four different characters in the long-running NBC-TV/syndicated TV crime drama series Law & Order. William is perhaps best known for his semi-regular role of Brandon Brindle on the TV series Small Wonder from 1985 to 1989. He also portrayed Kent Wallace, the host of Chappelle's Show's Frontline spoofs. In 1964, he appeared onstage in the touring production of "A Man For All Seasons". He had an uncredited role in the 1974 film Death Wish, welcoming Charles Bronson's character Paul Kersey to Chicago as Fred Brown.
