French Africa fell apart after the peace of 1952, except for Algeria and Tunisia, and several off-shore islands. Britain moved into granting autonomy and plain independence to her colonies under British Commonwealth status. Britain took measures to ensure that the independent states would be part of the alliance against the Axis, up to 1986.
