The Knights of Wundagore is a military order modeled after the knights of the middle ages, whose ranks are comprised of humanoid animals artificially evolved by the High Evolutionary. The order first came into being in the early 1950's to defend the High Evolutionary's citadel build upon Wundagore Mountain against the evil demon Chthon who had been imprisoned in the mountain thirteen centuries prior. The ghost of a Sixth Century magician named Magnus, who was among those who had entombed the demon, possessed the body of the High Evolutionary's one-time partner, Jonathan Drew to warn the master geneticist of the demonic threat beneath his feet. Deciding to train the community of evolved New Men who dwelled in the citadel to combat the impending demonic attack, Magnus suggested to the High Evolutionary that they be organized along the lines of the high disciplined soldiers of his day, the knights. No sooner had their training begun in earnest than the Knights of Wundagore had their baptism of fire against Chthon. Emerging victorious with the staunch support of their masters, the Knights undertook the full-time task of patrolling and protecting Wundagore. Years later, the High Evolutionary converted his citadel into a space-ark and left Earth to find a world for his New Men to settle. Finding such a world around the nearby star Sirius, he founded Wundagore II. Though the foundation of his civilization had the early support of the High Evolutionary, the history of Wundagore II has been tumultuous. At one point, a contingent of Ne Men rebelled against the Evolutionary and he was force to devolve them back to their original animal forms. In recent years, however, Wundagore II has been at peace, largely due to the efforts of its planet-wide order of Knights.
