Yūgen (幽玄 Yuugen) is a former Human soul, who passed away several thousand years ago. Having passed into Soul Society through some of the earliest Shinigami — then called Balancers (調整者 (バランサー) — Baransā) — where she resided in Rukongai. However, coming into her own spiritual powers made her known to the previous God of Time, who had existed for eons prior and was searching for his successor. Seeing potential in this strange new child, he took the girl under his wing, passing onto her both his teachings and position, and it is a role she's been in ever since, reigning as the God of Time (時神 Tokushin).

Both she and her predecessor have both outlived the First God of Time (初代時神 Shodai Tokushin), the originator of the flow of time who is said to have gone mad from his position in the universe.
