This particular illness refers to the draining of all magic from a gryphon. Not only do they use magic, gryphons are magic. Without a certain power level, their internal systems cannot maintain themselves. A gryphon with no magic eventually wanes and dies. A gryphon with hirs'ka'usk must be magically recharged, which involves treatment by a trondi'irn to reopen any closed off magical pathways in the gryphon's body, followed by a mage spell to send enough power flowing back through to recharge the physical systems. The worst example of hirs'ka'usk happened to Kelvren of the Silver Gryphons. After being badly injured during a post Mage Storm uprising near k'Valdemar Vale, he used the last of his magic to heal Hallock Stavern, who had been mortally wounded in the same engagement. Treyvan and Whitebird used a recharging procedure not attempted since Skandranon's time to heal him.
