  • Sean Burns was born in the year 760, Tyroconnell, Ulster, Ireland. He became a monk and was living in a monastery on the island of Iona where he was killed in the year 805 by Viking raiders, triggering his Immortality. Sean eventually found his true calling as a healer of the mind. Over the centuries, Sean helped many people with their problems in his role as a dedicated psychiatrist; he eventually studied with Sigmund Freud. He become a teacher to newly immortal Steven Keane, who lost a good friend, the Earl of Rosemont, to Duncan MacLeod, who was also a friend of Sean Burns. In 1796 in France, Sean attended the 100th wedding anniversary of Robert and Gina de Valicourt, an Immortal couple; other guests there included Duncan MacLeod, Hugh Fitzcairn, and Carolyn Mortimer. During World War I, Sean Burns was a psychiatrist at an army hospital in France; there, he helped soldiers with shell shock. When a patient at the hospital was about to stab another person; Duncan MacLeod, a soldier and medic, tried to help the man. Burns arrived and helped calm the man down. Outside the hospital, Sean and Duncan talk about the war and other things. Duncan was feeling guilty about the people who were wounded and dying because of the war and worried that he was not doing an adequate job of saving them. Sean told him that it was not his fault, he should not be feeling the way he did because Duncan didn't cause the soldiers' wounds and deaths. In 1996 Sean was still a psychiatrist, living and working in Limay, France. Sean received a call from his friend, MacLeod, who was under the influence of a Dark Quickening. Duncan went to visit Sean, and unable to resist the influence of the Dark Quickening he tried to ask Burns what he could do. Methos arrived and watched Burns try to talk MacLeod down, and then witnessed MacLeod kill his unarmed friend, but could not interfere. Fortified with Sean's positive Quickening as a part of himself, MacLeod finally allowed Methos to help him beat the Darkness. In Forgive Us Our Trespasses, Steven Keane challenged Duncan demanding he answer for the deaths of Sean Burns and the Earl of Rosemont, defying the efforts and advice of his friends, Duncan answered the challenge, Keane and MacLeod both survive the fight.
