- Doctor Nichols was a member of the Atlantis expedition, who joined the team in its fifth year of operation. According to Rodney McKay, he is fairly arrogant. In 2008, he led a team to M44-5YN, to research the effects of global warming on that planet. On one particular day, the glacier on the planet breached, causing massive flooding on the valley. He and his team were situated very close to the glacier when it collapsed, meaning he was likely killed, but that is not for certain. (SGA: "The Shrine")
- In exchange for use of his facilities to build walls for his whale tank, Montgomery Scott gave him the formula for transparent aluminum. Scott brushed off concerns that this would result in a change of the timeline, asking, "How do we know he didn't invent the thing?" Nichols had recently quit smoking prior to Scott and McCoy's visit. Though he had an honorable career, Nichols was losing his skills with age, becoming unable to perform his duties, and was forced to retire. In this role, he supervised engineering trainees, who would be called upon to solve engineering problems instead of him.
