  • Blackhill is a housing estate in the north east of Glasgow: north of Riddrie; east of Germiston; south of Provanmill and west of Ruchazie. In the 19th century Glasgow City Council purchased the land, then in Lanarkshire's boundary to build a prison. Two years later, new legislation gave central government control of prisons, who identified nearby Barlinnie as the site for the new prison. Blackhill, instead, became a golf course. Regeneration began in the 1970s with the demolition of some of the most run down streets such as Bargeddie Street and Cranhill Street.

abstract
  • Blackhill is a housing estate in the north east of Glasgow: north of Riddrie; east of Germiston; south of Provanmill and west of Ruchazie. In the 19th century Glasgow City Council purchased the land, then in Lanarkshire's boundary to build a prison. Two years later, new legislation gave central government control of prisons, who identified nearby Barlinnie as the site for the new prison. Blackhill, instead, became a golf course. Under the Slum Clearance Act 1935, the golf course was moved across Cumbernauld Road so Blackhill could be developed for housing. 1200 houses were built before the 2nd World War, mostly in spartan 'Rehousing' grade tenements although a sizeable number of 'Intermediate' grade cottage flats were also built. 39% of the estates original inhabitants were from the nearby Garngad area (now known as Royston.) The scheme was built to a higher density than many similar inter war housing estates in Glasgow and Blackhill obtained a notorious reputation in the city as it fell into decline. Drugs, organised crime and the rehousing of troublesome tenants to the area all contributed to the stigma of living in Blackhill. Regeneration began in the 1970s with the demolition of some of the most run down streets such as Bargeddie Street and Cranhill Street. By the 1990s, living conditions in the Blackhill tenements were grim as the buildings suffered from lack of maintenance by then-landlords, Glasgow City Council. Residents, inspired by the results achieved in Roystonhill by Spire View Housing Association, attempted to set up their own housing association to rebuild their homes but could not raise enough money to buy the land from the city council. Thenew Housing Association, active in the East End regeneration of Bridgeton and Calton were sympathetic to the cause of the frustrated Blackhill residents and incorporated the Blackhill tenants into their association. After the stock transfer, the tenement flats in Blackhill were demolished and low rise family homes built in their place. Only the cottage flats remain from the original scheme and these have been refurbished to a 21st century standard.
