"The Patriotic Forest Folk" is a short story written and illustrated by John R. Neill, featuring Oz-like animals celebrating Independence Day. Neill created the story in July 1916, at a time when the earlier isolationist climate in the United States regarding World War I was beginning to shift toward a more assertive mood that would lead to the American entry into the War in 1917. Long out of print, Neill's story was printed in a pamphlet in 2007 by Hungry Tiger Press.
