  • Three scientists; Hawley Griffin, Flora McKay and Jack Kensington, are working on a serum that can turn someone invisible. The missing component is a drug called monocane, which Jack prohibits the use of because it drove previous animal test subjects mad. However, Griffin obtains some anyway and perfects the serum, which he then takes. Flora and Jack arrive at Griffin's house, where their lab is also situated, to find that he has turned completely invisible. Unknown to either of them, Griffin has become infatuated with Flora, but she is already involved with Jack. He also doesn't tell them about the monocane. Griffin follows them home, and watches them having sex. Infuriated, he runs off and encounters a tramp, who he brutally murders in cold blood. Griffin later spies on his neighbour, and starts to harass her, as she is unable to see him. Finally, he rapes and kills her. When Flora and Jack learn of the murder, they conclude that Griffin is responsible. They go over to his house, but find that he has fled. Flora cannot understand why he would have done such a thing, as he is usually such a kind and gentle man, but it all becomes clear when Jack finds Griffin's notes and learns about the monocane. Griffin, his face concealed by bandages, takes refuge in a nearby inn, spending all of his time hiding in his room. One night, he sneaks into the innkeeper's room and rapes his wife. The innkeeper enters and witnesses this, but Griffin attacks him and throws him down the stares. The other tennants come out to see what is happening, at which point Griffin tears his bandages off and reveals his true invisible self before fleeing. A manhunt is begun by the police to try and catch the Invisible Man. Griffin, meanwhile, causes a train derailment, killing numerous people, and then stalks two volunteer searchers, eventually throwing them off of a cliff. He eventually returns to his own lab, where Flora and Jack have been trying to create a chemical which will reverse the process. Griffin watches them and then flies into a rage, attacking Jack. Flora grabs a flask and throws it at Griffin. When it smashes, he is doused by the concoction and briefly turns visible again. Horrified by seeing his own reflection, Griffin flees. Flora and Jack recreate the same formula, hoping that it will be enough to stop Griffin. Griffin eventually stumbles into a windmill, where he falls asleep on a pile of hay. The farmer who owns it arrives and sees the hay moving as Griffin rolls around. He calls the police, who soon arrive accompanied by Flora and Jack. The police set fire to the windmill, but Jack spots Griffin's footprints in the mud leading out of the windmill. Griffin then steals a policeman's gun and shoots some of them dead. Flora throws the chemical over him, and his bones, eyes and organs become visible. He retreats into the now burning windmill, dragging Flora with him. Jack follows them inside and finds Flora. Griffin attacks them and tackles Jack off, then grabs Flora. Seeing an opportunity, Flora kisses Griffin, giving Jack enough time to retrieve a gun. Flora kicks Griffin in the crotch and jumps out of the way. Jack shoots him and he falls from the windmill. Jack and Flora escape the windmill as it collapses, crushing Griffin to death. Jack says that they tampered with something they shouldn't have, and the two walk away from the burning wreckage of the windmill as the film ends.
