The follow-up to the Arethusa class was also designed for service in the North Sea, but larger and heavier armed, which moves them closer to the Town class. The Caroline class became the first of a variety of sub-classes with no end in sight. All ships bear names starting with the letter C, which has lead to the designation of the Caroline and her cousins as C-class.
