The Five Families are the five major Italian-American Mafia crime families which have dominated organized crime in New York City since the late 1920's. The Five Families eventually ended much of their fighting in the late 1930's by establishing the Commission, a place where the family bosses could all deliberate, negotiate and make deals peacefully and publicly in front of one another. The Five Families remain the powerhouse of Mafia activity in the US.
