De originele Cleveland bay is bijna uitgestorven omdat ze soms gefokt werden met een barbarijs of arabier. Ze zijn mede in stand gehouden doordat de Engelse koningin ermee fokt. De bekendste zijn dan ook die van de stallen van Buckingham Palace. Zoals de naam al aangeeft (het Engelse "bay" betekent roodbruin) is een Cleveland bay altijd geheel roodbruin met hooguit een witte bles of wat wit in de manen. De Cleveland bay kan als rij- en tuigpaard gebruikt worden.
