The hats are either ignored or kept as a novelty item. It serves no other purpose aside from aesthetics. They are occasionally worn with flippers. When talking while wearing a mudskipper hat, the player's chat head will show the hat as a completely different-looking hat. It has been like this since the release of RuneScape High Detail. The mudskipper hat used to be glitched, causing the top half of the player's face to disappear when talking to NPCs. Unusually, the player's chin remained intact and visible. This has been fixed.
