Walter approached Sperry, being jiu jitsu & helicopter buddies, and talked about opening up a school in Porto Alegre, which is a place where very rich and powerful people in Brazil live. So they did, and Carlos Aveline was there first student. Walter was the encyclopedia of Jiu Jitsu, as far as techniques, this guy new every trick and cheat in the book. Walter made Carlos like his son, teaching him day and night. Sperry on the other hand was the drill sargeant, train hard, eat right, respect, another round, mental toughness. Carlos trained 6 days a week twice a day for 4 years training and competing in Porto Alegre. He approached Walter and Sperry, one day, for there blessing to go to America to start a new life. So he left Brazil in 1995 to open his first school in Ocean Beach, San Diego as a Brown Belt. The school in Ocean Beach took off and exactly a year later he opened a huge school in Pacific Beach. He competed a few times here in America and won the Joe Moreira Tournament, which was the only tournament around in the early days. About two years later his family was having some issues in Brazil so he had to return and his Visa was running out. So the school was left to Odie Neto, the only black belt he ever produced. Carlos never returned to America due to immigration issues and other things. So upon his return to Brazil he opened his own MMA/ Weight gym school, where he started training for Vale Tudo. He had 9 fights in Brazil and won all. He also competed in the Jiu Jitsu worlds a few times but never placed, he lost to Jorge "Macaco" Patino. Carlos Aveline had 9 Vale Tudo Fights and never lost in Vale Tudo 9 - 0 He was Porto Algre Jiu Jitsu State Champion in 1992 and 1993 in the Peso Pena weight class (feather weight)
