Frunalians are a humanoid race native to the moon of Orelte, who have several insect-like characteristics. Though it is unclear whether or not the Frunalians are members of the Federation, many do choose to join Starfleet. In 2369, three Frunalian science vessels traveled to Deep Space 9 soon after the Bajoran wormhole was discovered. (DS9 episode: "Emissary") A Frunalian shipping company had purchased the DY-700 class Earth ship Alerica prior to 2372. It was en route to Bajor with a shipment of grain when it was forced to turn back by a Ferengi blockade. (DS9 novel: The 34th Rule)

abstract
  • Frunalians are a humanoid race native to the moon of Orelte, who have several insect-like characteristics. Though it is unclear whether or not the Frunalians are members of the Federation, many do choose to join Starfleet. The Frunalians are a scientifically-orientated society, but institutionalized ritual still has a place in their society. They also have a deep respect for the physical, emotional metamorphosis that each individual undergoes during their adult life. This process is known as "The Shift" and the onset of the metamorphosis varies from person to person. (ST - The Lost Era novel: Serpents Among the Ruins, TOS - Crucible novel: The Fire and the Rose) Frunalian physiology allows the use of both eyes independently, and the structure of their brain allows them to process both sets of information taken in as well. (ST - The Lost Era novel: Serpents Among the Ruins) They have an eltis, a flesh-covered sensory appendage which extends upward from their brow over their hairless head and down their spine. It is known to ripple. (ST - The Lost Era novel: One Constant Star) In the 2290s, the Federation began to negotiate with the Frunalians over rights to mine rubindium in their star system. For some time Ambassador Pelfrey attempted to negotiate for the rights, but the Frunalians proved to be rather difficult to negotiate with. When Spock assumed Gregory's place in 2293, he and Alexandra Tremontaine were able to get the Frunalians to agree to the deal, when they threatened that the Federation were ready to pull out of the talks. (TOS - Crucible novel: The Fire and the Rose) In 2369, three Frunalian science vessels traveled to Deep Space 9 soon after the Bajoran wormhole was discovered. (DS9 episode: "Emissary") A Frunalian shipping company had purchased the DY-700 class Earth ship Alerica prior to 2372. It was en route to Bajor with a shipment of grain when it was forced to turn back by a Ferengi blockade. (DS9 novel: The 34th Rule) Kiriliona is a Frunalian beverage. It is able to be safely consumed by other species such as humans and trill. Frunalians are also capable of drinking margaritas. (DS9 novel: The 34th Rule, ST - Typhon Pact novel: Plagues of Night) All of the appearances of and references to the Frunalians in Star Trek literature were in novels by David R. George III. They were first mentioned in "Emissary".
