An alternator is an electromechanical device that converts mechanical energy to alternating current (AC) electrical energy. Most alternators use a rotating magnetic field but linear alternators are occasionally used. In principle, any AC electrical generator can be called an alternator, but usually the word refers to small rotating machines driven by automotive and other internal combustion engines. The alternative often fitted to vehicles for battery charging is the Dynamo

- Datsun 510 was first fitted with a lightweight 35 AMP Hitachi alternator. In mid-1971 it switched to a 50 AMP unit. These alternators will usually last 10-15 years or more than 100,000 miles. The only normal maintainence is to replace the brushes when the dashboard alternator light starts flickering. The alternator uses an external Voltage regulator.
