Players control Nickelodeon and Marvel as they across a post-apocalyptic United States, ove-runed by Thanos. We Have Fallen is played from a third-person perspective; players controlling the Nickelodeon characters use firearms and improvised weapons, and can use stealth while the Marvel characters use their superpowers to defend against hostile humans, Thanos' minions and cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Zero Horizon fungus. In the game's online multiplayer mode, up to eight players engage in co-operative and competitive gameplay.

Development of We Have Fallen began in 2009, after the release of Nice Cat's previous game, Treasure Explorer. The relationship between the Nickelodeon and Marvel characters is the focus, with all other elements developed around it. Several actors from the Nickelodeon series, SpongeBob SquarePants, The Fairly OddParents, The Adventures of Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genuis, Catscratch, Danny Phantom, My Life as a Teenage Robot, and T.U.F.F. Puppy and the Marvel Cinematic Universe reprise their roles, respectively. The original score was composed and performed by Brian Tyler and Hans Zimmer. Following its announcement in November 2011, We Have Fallen was widely anticipated. It received widespread acclaim for its story, characterization, score, subtext, and depiction of crossover between Nickelodeon and Marvel. We Have Fallen became one of the best-selling game of 2013, selling over 1.3 million units in its first week and over seven million units within eight months. Considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time, it won year-end accolades, including multiple Game of the Year awards from several gaming publications, critics, and game award shows, making it one of the most awarded games in history. After the game's release, Nice Cat released several downloadable content additions; We Have Fallen: Forgotten adds a new single-player campaign following, Ant-Man Scott Lang Ms. Marvel Carol Danvers and Wasp. An enhanced edition of the original game, We Have Fallen Remastered, was released for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in March 2015. A sequel, We Will Rise, was announced in December 2016.
