- Steve Gerber (1947-2008) was an American comic book writer best known as the creator of Marvel Comics character Howard the Duck. Famous for his runs on Man-Thing, The Defenders, Daredevil and many others, Geber was known for bucking trends with his skill for weaving social satire and absurdist comedy into traditional comic book adventures—in one famous instance, his failure to meet a deadline on an issue of Howard led him to substitute the story with an illustrated prose piece detailing conversation between himself and the title character. - As a prolific comic book artist and editor, Gerber spent the majority of his career working at Marvel Comics. He is perhaps best known as the creator of the satiric Marvel character, Howard the Duck. He also created the character of Man-Thing for Marvel. He had long runs on the Marvel books Daredevil and Sub-Mariner and worked on such titles as Marvel Spotlight, Shanna the She-Devil, Omega the Unknown and The Defenders.

Writing in The Seventies, he prefigured the Darker and Grittier Eighties, writing genre-stretching stories about small characters with less-than-supernatural problems. Before Alan Moore's notable run on Swamp Thing, Gerber was writing Man-Thing, redefining the character and moving from Sword and Sorcery to Sci Fi to Horror stories in as many issues. Before Dave Sim's Cerebus, there was Gerber's Howard the Duck, a Deadpan Snarker cartoon character thrust into a world of real people and real problems.

Other works include Man-Thing, Omega the Unknown, Marvel Spotlight: Son of Satan, The Defenders, Marvel Presents: Guardians of the Galaxy, and a lengthy run on Daredevil. At the time of his death, he was writing Countdown to Mystery: Doctor Fate for DC Comics, having briefly worked with a version of the character in 1983. Gerber was posthumously inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2010.
