A home theater consist of equipment capable of reproducing sound and video close to or better than it was intended to be presented in a theater. This can be accomplished by using an amplifier capable or processing Dolby Pro Logic, Dolby Digital or DTS surround sound. In order to best emulate this sound at least 5 speakers are recommended to be placed throughout the room. The most common processing is 5.1 which stands for 5 speakers plus LFE (Low Frequency Effect). With a 5.1 system you have a center channel, left and right, and 2 side surround effect speakers. The .1 is generally handled by a stand alone powered sub woofer which handles all of the low frequency responses. Combined this setup will allow the sound waves to produce a feel that you are in the middle of the action.
