In 1640, Emperor Tewoflos pursued the rebel Dejazmach Dermen to the monastery of Debre Mawi. The monastery twice refused to handover the rebel to the emperor, in response Tewoflos promised to rebuild the monastery in a grand scale. His request was granted and Dermen was killed. In the 1880s, both Emperor Menelik II (r. 1880-1913) and his wife Empress Taytu Bitul made lavish donations to the monastery.
