| - Springfield is referenced in the stage play A Mad World, My Masters (1977) by British writer Barrie Keeffe and in the novels Stripping Penguins Bare (1991) and The Wimbledon Poisoner (1990) by respective British writers Michael Carson and Nigel Williams. A sample from "Son of a Preacher Man" was used on Cypress Hill's cult-classic stoner-culture song "Hits from the Bong" on their album Black Sunday (1993). A year later the song was featured in a scene of the film Pulp Fiction. In the movie, the song was a background for the discussion of Mia Wallace portrayed by Uma Thurman and Vincent Vega portrayed by John Travolta over the intercom. The soundtrack reached No. 21 on the Billboard 200, and at the time, went platinum (1,000,000 units) in Canada alone. "Son of a Preacher Man" helped to sell over 2 million units of the album and to reach #6 on the charts according to SoundScan. Two Dusty Springfield's songs appeared on an episode of the US television series Ally McBeal. The show's character Georgia Thomas has referred to two Dusty's songs. The Pet Shop Boys staged a tribute to the lately passed Dusty, performing "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" as a part of their Nightlife tour in 1999. Neil Tennant sang with Dusty by means of a video projection that featured the late singer's performance from their original promotional video along with clips of her television appearances from the 1960s. Footage of this event was released on the Pet Shop Boys DVD Montage. UK jazz-pop duo Swing Out Sister have covered two songs associated with Dusty Springfield: "The Windmills of Your Mind" (1989) and "Am I The Same Girl?" (1992). They have also performed live the Springfield-associated song "Where Am I Going?" "I Only Want to Be with You" was used as the theme song for the US television sitcom Arli$$ (HBO). Dusty Springfield is mentioned as being a favorite singer of the fictional Dempsey sisters in the 2000 novel Welcome to Temptation by American romantic comedy writer Jennifer Crusie. The nationwide tour of a British musical Dusty: The Musical opened on February 23 2000 at the Churchill Theatre in Bromley. It told the story of Dusty's life through the memories and dreams of Carol, a fictional, middle-aged housewife and devoted fan. Dusty was played by Mari Wilson, Carol by Chrissie Cotterill and the director was Bob Tomson. In Australia, a musical based on Dusty Springfield's life, Dusty - The Original Pop Diva, premiered in January 2006 to sold-out performances. The musical starring Tamsin Carroll as Springfield, won a 2006 Helpmann Award for Carroll as Best Female Actor in a Musical. Deni Hines plays Reno. The imaginary character represents Springfield's bisexual relationships and the prejudice of the time. Currently, there are movie projects in the works based on Springfield's biographies. One of them is slated to have Broadway actress Kristin Chenoweth portraying Springfield. In 2007 the band Maximo Park created a track "Mary O'Brien" chronicling and exploring Springfield's life and career. It is contained on their "Our Velocity" single. Springfield's 1968 song "I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten" was used on the UK teen soap Hollyoaks in a September 2007 episode where John Paul McQueen and Craig Dean parted ways. Kirsten Holly Smith performs "Stay Forever:The Life and Music of Dusty Springfield" at the Renberg Theatre in Los Angeles, CA in February, 2008. In the ceremony "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" was performed by singer Patti LaBelle and "Son of a Preacher Man" by Joss Stone. Dusty's songs are featured in "My Best Friend's Wedding" (1997) starring Julia Roberts. These include "Wishin' and Hopin'" and "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" which is sung by Cameron Diaz. In February 2008 a Dusty tribute act by Katy Setterfield won the BBC's "The One and Only" TV talent contest, hosted by Graham Norton. The prize being a 3 month residency in a Las Vegas show for impersonators. She was viewed as being the best act in the competition and beat Frank Sinatra and Lionel Richie in the final. On 4th February 2008, Shelby Lynne released "Just A Little Lovin'" on the Lost Highway label. Produced by former Springfield collaborator, Phil Ramone, the album contains nine covers (ten in the UK version) of songs recorded by Dusty and one original Shelby Lynne penned song. The record has the words "Inspired By Dusty Springfield" on the sleeve.
