The party was formed by Michael Amato in support of his campaign for a seat in the House of Parliament, the country's legislature. Previously the mayor of the city of Acton, Amato campaigned on a progressive and republican platform; his policies later laid the foundation for the Party of Social Democrats. Currently, the PS holds 37 seats in the lower chamber of Parliament, and 9 seats in the upper chamber.
